Vintage Thingies 47 - Simplicity Patterns

When I was digging in my drawers to find some buttons, I came across the Simplicity and other patterns I have kept for whatever reason.

This is a teenage size, so I must have kept it for sentimental reasons only. What about these:

See how the middle girl on the first pattern has been cut off? That is what my mother did when she had bought the pattern and the fabric but had no time to sew it for Christmas or a birthday. She would wrap the fabric nicely, with the little picture, telling "you will get this of this fabric, when I have time". My overall was of a soft blue flowery synthetic material. Lovely to wear but not so nice when you had to go.

These dresses were probably not for me but for one of my elder sisters. I think the yellow suit in the top pattern looks very elegant.

The last set of overalls may be too new to be vintage, but it sure looks old fashioned. The big shoulders made my proportions look better, but taht is all I miss from this time. You can see the girl on the left carry a shoulder bag, so these are not pyjamas patters! Did you wear overalls?

This is of course Vintage Thingies Thursday, hosted by the Coloradolady Suzanne. Click here to get to her blog with today's list of links to vintage stories.

  1. I never wore overalls--except maybe when I was preschool age.

  2. I enjoyed looking at your vintage patterns and remembering that my mom had a suitcase full of old Simplicity patterns. I don't know what ever happened to them?

  7. Oh, yes I did. These styles bring back memories. I attended two different weddings a few years back and both mother of the grooms wore very formal split skirts like these so maybe a comeback.

  8. I remember having a store bought jumpsuit when they were popular...they did pose a certain problem! The yellow suit looks very smart and something that could be worn today.

  10. I'm not a sewer - in fact I received a "D" in home economics in the 5th grade for my sewing project. The only D i ever received in school. So what does that say!!!! This post brings back memories and makes me LOL.

  12. The yellow pattern I know! I used it when I had to try to get a better grade in sewing before graduating... On a scale of 4-10 (4 being the lowest=Fail) I got mine up from 5 (thanks to swetty hands)to 7. I made it in moss green wool with printed black roses on it and used black Chanel-ribbon decoration all around it. The year was 1962...
    Oh, how I hated sewing!

  13. Ok confession time. I made myself an emerald green all in one with cuffs at the ankles like on the Burda pattern. It ha cover buttons down the v front and full gathered sleeves too. I must've looked like a cross between a leprecorn and aladin! LOL Until I saw that pic I had managed to forget. LOL I'll have to join the foreign legion now.

  14. This will make you laugh but I have all my Mum's old Simplicity patterns and since a lot of the style are back 'in' I'm busy sewing them for my daughters! I'd say they are the same vintage as the ones you show, also Style, and Butterick! I've a whole box of them and they are always being taken out and looked at for choosing clothes!

  15. It's fun to look back at those styles. My mom made me several of the one piece pant outfits and I do remember what a hassle it was when you had to "go"!

  16. Yes, I wore overalls, and you are right. You don't want to wait 'til the last minute to "go"!! I love seeing all of these patterns, because they remind me of when I used to make alot of my clothes. I used to love doing that. If only I could get someone to cut out the patterns for me, I might start sewing again!
    Happy VTT!

  18. Hilarious...a real blast from the past! I loved A-line skirts (so flattering!) and the last pattern from the 80s really made me laugh (I think I buried all memories of 80s fashions!)

    Thanks so much for sharing!
