VTT 3 - Sock Pattern

Suddenly it is Thursday again and time to see what Suzanne's friends are showing this week for Vintage Thingie Thursday.

Around Christmas, when DD Kaija was helping me start to reorganize my cellar sewing room, she found my hand written notes from my school days in the early 60's. It was my 6th year of school, second year in the big school, and I had already learned to knit mittens. Twice, in fact. The second time we used two different colours to make stripy mittens. But let's see how to knit socks:

You need to know the names of the different parts you are going to learn to knit.

And you need to understand the signs for the different stitches:

The heel is difficult for many beginners.

Then you must knit a sample of the different patterns and choose your favourite, and count you stitches.

My notes included pictures of other fashionable socks, for inspiration.

I had also found pictures of different heels in my mother's knitting magazines.

My socks ended up very well made, just the right size, and I even had a chance to practice mending on them when my toes finally found their way through the sock.

This was all for this week's VTT. Time to go on with the link list!

  1. I knitted baby bootees & bed socks but that's all! Are knitted socks comfy in shoes? I always wonder about that, it would have to be very fine yarn.

  2. It is great that you learned how to knit socks in school. I had no knitting classes at all. Sadly I had to learn it from books mainly.

I am glad sock making has become popular again. They are good fun and last a long time. Thanks for sharing Ulla.

  5. I have always wanted to knit mitts, gloves and socks but my knitting is mainly on the flat side. I hate dropping stitches since I can't ever pick them up 0 I always gave it to my mom to do. You were quite young to have been able to knit sicks successfully.

  11. I have never knitted socks before, only booties and scarves, so I admire anyone who can do that! It's nice that you still have all of those notes. I still have my notebook from sewing class. I loved that class so much. And Mrs. Peacock, my teacher. She was a doll!
    Happy VTT!

  12. Oh wow! I've always wondered about knitting socks, but since I don't actually knit - - - it was only a passing thought.

Those look really warm, and my feet are freezing just now.

Maybe it's time I LEARNED to knit some.
