VTT 1 - Lace Shuttle

Welcome to the new year of VTT! Suzanne has created a new badge for us. My older Vintage Thingies Thursday posts will remain listed under the old badge, and a new list will be started under this button on my sidebar.

I will start the year by showing the most wonderful Christmas gift I received from big sister P. She handed forward some family heirlooms she has received from our mother years ago, and I will leave them someday for my daughter. The goodies came in this box:

This is what was inside:

Great Aunt Saima's tatting shuttle, with some lace she has tatted, a tiny hook with a ring for your finger, and a small pair os scissors. I have posted about this lace before, and I thought I had a shuttle I couldn't find. I still think I may have one, because I'm thinking of a slightly different shuttle. This one is silver, with Saima's nick name engraved. I'm so happy to have this set. Thank you, P. Big hugs!

To help me use the shuttle, P gave me also a book about women's own handicrafts:

There is a chapter about tatting lace:

All I need now is to take the book and the shuttle, and start working.

By the end of the day I should have something like this finished:

Only kidding! I have never tried this, and I think it would take me weeks to make a simple lace like in the first picture.

Suzanne is showing some vintage Christmas ornaments, and the list of links to other VTT blogs.

Vintage Thingies 45 - Tatted Lace Tablecloth

It has been a while without Vintage Thingies Thursdays for me, but now I'm back again here too. It is time to show our vintage treasures and share the fun through Suzanne's blog.

My entry this week is a little table cloth with tatted lace and embroidery. Great Auntie Saima, who else, tried her hand on tatting as well. You can click the picture to see the details.

I wanted to show her knotting shuttle, too, but (because my sewing room in the cellar is such a mess) couldn't find it just now. Maybe later, on another Thursday.

Please visit all the blogs showing Vintage Thingies this Thursday, the link list is on Coloradolady's blog here.

Lacy stories

I promised some of you to show some bobbin lace after I showed great aunty Saima's lace book on Vintage Thingies Thursday. This lace is also called bone lace, pillow lace, Honiton lace and Chantilly lace according to my little Glossary of Arts and Crafts. This is the tail of my wedding dress:

My mother made the dress using some old machine made bobbin lace. For the next photo I inserted some tan fabric to show the lace better. The lace goes like this on the back too.

It was a long bit of lace! Even the cuffs are made of the same lace.

For the veil we used tatted lace made by dear great aunt Saima. I can say "we" here, because I sewed the lace on the veil! Tatted lace is made with a small shuttle kind of a tool and looks rather different.

And finally some hand-made bobbin lace. My mother-in-law was also a very talented craftswoman, and she made this runner for me. The middle part is made separately, and the surrounding edge is all in one piece, going around the corners. You can hardly see the seam (well, you can't see it, because it happens to be at the other end!). The thread is unbleached linen.

This is another table runner she made for me. White linen fabric, stitched in white pearl cotton, and the lace white linen thread, again with built-in corners. She also made some runners using silk thread, but I think linen is more suitable for this technique.
