Two more Granny Squares

This is yesterday's granny, using the light blue and dark brown yarns from before. When I was a very young girl, I thought boys with dark brown t-shirts and light blue jeans looked cool. Here I made groups of 3 instead of my usual 4, and 4 rounds instead of 3.

Today's square is back to my normal pattern.

I have been busy cleaning windows and feeling a little heroic about it. Now I need to iron fresh summer curtains for them, and polish my halo.

Vintage Thingies 23 "Dresden Plate"

Thursday is here again, with everyone's vintage treasures. Suzanne is hosting this meme, this week with a theme "What Was I Thinking?". I couldn't find anything suitable for the theme, so I chose another theme I have been bumping into lately.

It is Dresden Plates. Stephanie has been sewing this lovely dresden plate quilt in greens and blues, and there was a giveaway as well, with dresden plate templates.

I have not yet tried that pattern, but last week when I cleaned my vase cabinet above the fridge, I found this:

It is a cracked porcelain plate from early 1900, with a perforated metal frame. I believe it is used under a hot coffeepot. We have a perfectly nice name for this thing in Finnish, pannunalunen, but I can't find a translation for it. :-( You must know what I mean!

Here you must click to enlarge the picture to see the connection to the Dresden plates: My plate is manufactured in Dresden, Germany.

Be sure to visit all the blogs participating this week, the list of links is here!

You are welcome to give me a translation of pannunalunen!

Wednesday's Granny Square

This is a late night show, it's ten o'clock my time and I need to go to sleep.

The darker brown is the wool I recycled.

Green Square, Green Ideas

Today's granny square has a new colour, green. I found some tiny balls of this yarn I had from my mother from my grandmother. I knitted a pull-over vest for Mr. Kotkarankki of this yarn some decades ago.

In the same place I found a part of a striped wool garment, just waiting to be re-used for something else. This is what it looked like after I pulled the yarn end:

After I washed the skeins I let them dry in the sun and wind ...

... so that I could make three cute little balls of fresh yarn for my coming granny squares!

I'm a very recycling person.

I'm a Bag Lady?

Here are the newest shopping bags I have sewn, recycling a table cloth, here

and a pillow case here

These two bags are lined with a light polyamid fabric, because the pillowcase material is thin.

I want the bags to be safe for carrying home groceries, washable, and a nice replacement for plastic bags.

Here are my granny squares for Sunday

and Monday

I really need to get some other colours. These squares remind me of wool socks only.

I'm off to sew some more bags! Have a productive week.

Spring is here

On May Day the weather was warm and the sun was shining. I took some pictures in the yard to show how far we are with the spring right now. This is moss blooming, about 1" high:

Pussy willows high up in the tree

Birch tops are showing a slight green shade, the leaves are not open yet.

Scilla sibirica, a garden plant which spreads easily from the seeds and has little bulbs.

First daffodils opened yesterday

We are waiting for a rain to make the nature green. Happy May everyone!

Grannying along

I noticed that I can knit and crochet when the project is small enough. The wool jumper for DS1 is still waiting to be finished; I gave up on it several years ago after I needed cortisone shots in my knitting elbow. Knitting this little bunny was easy and fun. I created my own pattern by adding her a skirt. I think her name is Milly.

His name is Billy, and they are friends now. Later this year they will take a flight to Australia, where they will meet the other softies for Mirabel and find their new families.

Pip from Meet me at Mike's has been crocheting granny squares and showing a new one every day, and will continue until the end of May. I have been playing along more irregularly. Today I can show you five of my latest creations:

They may grow bigger still, so the yarn ends are all just hanging there. My yarn stash is a little dull, these are all leftovers from knitting socks for the family. What a lovely excuse to buy new yarn in lovely colours!
I have been sewing too, but I forgot to take pictures. The bags can wait for another day!
