VTT 19 - Anne of Green Gables

This week I started a new book. I needed something more entertaining after Trask's Language.  Pip is hosting a book club, and their new book is Anne of Green Gables. I have seen the TV series a couple of times, and read the books when I was young and when I wasn't any more. This book is from my mother's bookshelf:

She apparently had it for her name day present when she was eight years old, a great age to get a book about an 11-year-old girl. Have you read L.M. Montgomery's books about Anne Shirley's life on Prince Edward Island? It is enjoyable reading for girls of any age.

I'm reading this in Finnish and enjoying the old-fashioned translation. They even "translated" her name: Ann was Anni and Anne with an e became Anna. The paper is yellowed, and the book has the lovely smell of an old book.

Suzanne is hosting Vintage Thingie Thursday. She has a long and lovely list of links to other vintage thingies. Thank you for coming by!

  1. I just read the entire Anne series recently! For some reason I knew the basic story but had never read them when I was growing up. Wonderful books -- and how sweet to have your mother's copy!

I'd love to know more about your "Name Day"tradition! Perhaps a blog post someday?

  3. I have not read the whole series, or even watched it all on tv. My mother loved the tv series.

It is hard to find stories like that for younger girls today, that will have the lasting power to want to share generation after generation. How special to have the specific book your mother had.

  4. Enjoy the book!! LOVED it as a young girl and so did my daughters. We also loved the movie...in fact it is a Christmas ritual to watch it every year during the holidays!
    Take care!!

  9. Great book I hope you have a lovely time reading it.

I love old books too. I know the words are the same as in cheap paperbacks but somehow they are more meaningful when in an old typeset in an aged hardback book -more like the author themselves would've seen them.

  12. Sad to say but I have yet to read Anne. My eldest daughter has all of L.M. Montgomery's books and has read them all - some several times. I have watched the Canadian series and enjoyed it immensely. Perhaps I will get to it one day.
