Vintage Thingies 36 - Embroidery

After the vacation last week I have been busy getting things back to normal and there was no time to dig up and photograph "new" vintage thingies. Luckily there was this picture from my celler sewing/storage room I haven't shown earlier.

It is, once again, from my mother's family, from the early 1900. The embroidered towel-rack cover is a wonderful example of jugendstil or Art Nouveau. The towels hang in their hooks behind this cover, and nobody needs to see if they are worn out or not quite fresh. Some museum examples can be seen here. My flowers are stitched in silk on linen. I just love this pattern!

Suzanne is hosting VTT and she has a long list of partizipating blogs. Why don't you join us?

  5. That is just beautiful, and the Art Nouveau design is so much more apparent when I enlarged the picture. How wonderful that you mother's family held on to so many things.

  6. Silk threads are so sleek and shiny, a good choice for this beautiful piece. I am not usually drawn to art nouveau but this design could lend itself to other periods.

  12. I've not seen one of these before. So pretty as well as having a practical use. Those roses look perfect- a little like Macintosh designed glass ones too.

  13. I enjoy some of the older version of things than some of the modern. I really like that towel rack, but most of the lovely towel. So nice of you to leave a comment and visit.

  16. The towel rack cover is beautiful, and I think it's such a great idea to have one! Sometimes I don't change the towels as often as I should, but no one would know if I had one!

  17. How beautiful -- I love how home makers from years past made even practical things -- like a towel cover -- beautiful. Gorgeous embroidery.

Hmm... I have an old washstand with a towel rack on it, just right for such a cover. If it ever wants a new home. . . :-)

  19. What a great idea - I'd never heard of that before. We just bought all new towels for one bathroom because the old ones were looking raggedy - still very useable - but raggedy. Wish we had these here.
