Himmeli

Himmeli is made of rye straw for Christmas. It is a traditional Scandinavian ornament, and the name comes from the Swedish and German word Himmel meaning heaven or sky.

I have seen them made of plastic straws in bright colours but for me the original material is the only right one.

  1. They are beautiful. I will have to put mine up again in the upper hallway. They do look so pretty in proper straw.

  2. Love your LA quilt on your earlier post. Yes, "himmel" is a Norwegian word as well! The red painted Christmas china set is great. Hope you are fine after the op :-)

  3. They look complicated to make. Smaller ones would most definitely stand out hanging on a tree.

  5. The ladies society at church made some for the Christmas bazaar one year. Mine lasted 25 years - with gentle handling. A beautiful thing.
